On Monday, October 26th, 2015 at Mountain Crest Elementary School, Sonia Nazario, author of Enrique’s Journey, was honored at a dinner before her speech at Western Piedmont Community College.

Last spring, several Mountain Crest teachers and other Burke County employees worked on a professional development book study with Enrique’s JourneyLora Austin, principal of Mountain Crest Elementary School, said, “Mountain Crest teachers studied this novel because it is a journey so many we know and love have had to endure.  We were also very interested because Enrigue ends up in North Carolina.  Western Piedmont Community College agreed to partner with us in hosting the author and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Sonia Nazario.  She came to Mountain Crest because we are indeed THE BEST!”

At the dinner, students and teachers from WPCC and from MCES, as well as some students and their parents from our Mother’s Club here at Mountain Crest enjoyed a catered meal from Las Salsa’s Mexican Restaurant, along with desert provided by Panadería La Guatemalteca.

Sonia Nazario signed our copies of her books saying…    “Thank you for helping so many Enriques in North Carolina! Always keep studying with Enrique’s determination – GANAS!”
